One of the great Romances to have come out the '40s and '50s, this trilogy was the masterpiece of Mervyn Peake.
A highly accomplished illustrator, Peake had written nonsense verse, but turned his talents to this epic saga, partially in response to the horrors of World War Two, which he witnessed as a War Artist.
