Bill Bryson
A Short History of Nearly Everything
New York: Broadway Books, 2003.
First printing.
This is a huge undertaking, a popular history of human knowledge, undertaken most successfully by the mellifluous Mr. Bryson.
His summaries of every branch of scientific thought are easy to understand, but so dense that they are also easy to forget.
I have read the book three times and cannot remember a thing, except that most great scientists appear to be of Scottish ancestry.
Highly recommended for the sense of wonder he engenders that we and the planet have evolved and flourished, due to myriad tiny factors that could all change, with disasterously immediate consequences for our profligate species.
